Bowman Gray Pool closing July 21

I am writing to notify you that beginning July 21, 2008 through approximately August 23, 2008 the Bowman Gray Pool will be closed for repairs. As you may know, over the past year we have been experiencing problems with higher water temperatures during the summer months and lower air temperatures during the winter months. In November we requested that Facilities Services secure funding to complete the necessary work to the pool’s mechanical areas and duct work. I received notice about three weeks ago that funding had been secured, and more recently that the schedule would allow for the work to be completed around the start of the new academic year.

I realize that this is an inconvenience to those of us who enjoy the pool for recreational purposes, but given the problems we have encountered - this shutdown is necessary. The end result will provide a better swimming environment for everyone. We are working to hopefully secure open swim hours at another site close to campus, but we probably will not know anything for another 10 days regarding this option. Unfortunately Koury Natatorium will be drained for repairs from July 25-August 25, so this is not an option.

We will keep you informed as we learn more regarding the status of Bowman Gray, as well an alternative swim site. For now, please plan on July 20^th being the last day that Bowman Gray will be open.
