Common
Aquatics Questions
-
When can I swim, and what is the process for
checking-in?
-
What happens if I forget my ONE Card?
-
Can I bring a guest to the pool?
-
You may bring up to two guest during the Summer schedule,
or during a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday during the academic
year.
Check out
EXSS/Campus Rec Guest Policies for details on how the
departmental Guest Policy works.
-
Where are the locker rooms?
-
Can I check out a towel or locker?
-
Any

faculty/staff with current Gym and
Pool Privileges may check out a lock and/or towel from the Woollen Gym Basket Room
(along the same hallway as the locker rooms).
-

faculty/staff with current Gym and
Pool Privileges. Please
inquire at the Woollen Gym Basket Room. Students are not eligible for permanent
lockers, but can use their ONE card to check out a lock from the
Basket Room.
-
Can I bring my family to swim?
-
Yes, you may bring family as long as they have
current Gym and Pool Privileges.
At Bowman Gray, all lanes are designated for lap swimming from
Monday to Thursday. If you bring family on these days then
they must lap swim. Family Hours at Bowman Gray are Friday
to Sunday. During this time please feel free to play and
splash around.
-
Kessing pool always has both lap swimming and
family swim anytime the pool is open.
-
Can I try out the facilities before committing to
purchasing a pass?
-
Yes,
if you are currently eligible to purchase a Gym and Pool Pass.
Please check here to see if you
are eligible, and then contact the Campus Recreation office in 203
Woollen Gym at 843-PLAY for a trial pass.
-
Why is the indoor pool closed during the late morning and early
afternoon?
-
What are the lengths of the lanes in the pool?
-
Bowman Gray has two 50 meter lanes, six 25 meter
lanes (shallow end), and six 25 yard lanes (deep end).
-
Kessing has six 25 yard
lanes.
-
How many laps for a mile?
-
What is the pool water temperature?
-
Bowman Gray is kept between 82-84 degrees.
It is a teaching facility and that is an optimal temperature for
teaching swim classes.
-
Kessing pool is generally between
75-85 degrees,
but it greatly depends on the summer weather.
-
Why do you close on days of home football games?
-
Being our EXSS facilities
are so close to the football stadium, it would be extremely
difficult for our patrons and staff to access the area on days of
home football games. With a reduced bus schedule and closed
parking lots, we would not be able to provide enough staffing to
keep the facilities open. Thus, the department has decided
to close all recreation facilities on home football game
Saturdays.
-
How many people can swim in a lane?
-
What is circle swimming?
-
Circle swimming allows many people to swim in lane
without running into each other. You swim counter clockwise
around the black line down the middle of your lane. If you
wish to pass the person in front of you, give them a gentle tap on
the foot and they shall pull aside at the wall to let you
pass. Circle swimming is best done with swimmers of the
similar
ability.
-
Why
is the Bowman Gray balcony so hot during the winter?
-
Bowman
Gray is a old pool with an old means of heating and cooling.
The heat for the pool air is drawn from steam pipes located in a
room directly underneath the balcony floor. When the weather
turns cold and the pipes are opened, steam is directed through the
radiator pipes around the pool deck. Much of the heat,
though, is built up and lost through that room. The heat
rises into the balcony, making it quite possibly the hottest place
on campus.
